LPC Critique Review and Contest entries due April 20
- Wednesday 7th of April 2010 11:28 AM

I hope you are getting your entries ready for this year's NEW Contest and Critique Review. The board has thought through this new process at length and feel that you are going to benefit greatly whether you are most interested in the contest portion and/or the critique review portion. It's still being considered a trial process so if it works this year, we'll continue it for next year. We're anxious to hear from you. And and most of all good luck!

Announcing the new and improved contest and critique review program
- Tuesday 23rd of February 2010 04:37 PM

The time has come to unveil the new rules for what has been known as the Critique Contest for the past 25+ years. After much discussion by the committees and the Board of Directors, we have taken the Critique Contest and split it into two parts. A Contest and a Critique Review.

The contest will be very similar to the past with some slight changes made to the categories. We have either combined a few and eliminated the less popular ones. You will no longer receive critiques with these entries but will be rcognized at the Ag Media Summit during the awards recognition session.

If you are interested in receiving a critique of your work then we have the new program called the Critique Review. This is designed to give you the opportunity to sit down with the expert who has critiqued your work and ask them questions about their comments, ways to improve, etc. This will also happen during the Ag Media Summit but if you cannot attend, we will arrange for a video recording to be furnished to you.

We know there will be questions and I'm sure you have opinions on what you think about this program. We are trying this for one year only. If it seems to be the direction to go, we will continue with the two programs. Take a look at the forms and rules. We think you are going to be happy with the new changes.

We are getting all of these changes posted on the Web site right now but you can go to this link to take your first look at them: http://www.livestockpublications.com/forms.php

Contest and Critique Rules and Forms almost ready
- Monday 22nd of February 2010 04:32 PM

We are in the final stages of reviewing the newly re-vamped Contest and the brand new Critique division. A couple things we can let you know is when you enter the Contest, there will be no critiques. But, if you want to have in-depth critiques including a one-on-one session with the reviewer (formerly known as judge) then you can enter the Critique portion. Full details will be released as early as tomorrow. Please keep in mind that the deadlines is one month LATER. All entries and portfolios will be due on April 20, 2010. More to come soon.

Major Changes to Contest for 2010
- Wednesday 20th of January 2010 12:57 PM

After many hours (and years) of discussion, the Critique Contest has been radically changed after 34 years of basically the same format. We have listened to your comments and swirled them around in our heads. We know that the recognition is important, yet we believe that you are more interested in the critique. Therefore in 2010 we are going to totally re-make the contest.

We are working on the final details but have this information so far:

The Jim Flanagan Most Improved Publication award will stay the same and will remain as our major honored award.

We have created five categories for entries: (please keep in mind this is a BRIEF overview)
1) General Excellence is where you will submit two magazines and the entire publication is reviewed and critiqued.
2) Design (anything other than advertising) Includes covers, contents, pages, editorial layout.
3) Advertising (an entry will be considered any thing that is paid for and published in your publication) It could be a one inch ad or a four color page ad.
4) Editorial (three entries will be submitted as a "portfolio".) A portfolio will be any combination of articles from any combination of writers. For example: Magazine X can enter three from writer John Jones or Magazine X can enter three entries from two or three different writers.
5) Web sites. These will be critiqued on whatever day the judge/reviewer chooses.

A point that was discussed is that the rules will be minimal. If you want to mount your entries on hot pink foam board go for it. We are not going to dictate those things, yet let you use your common sense. Also your "entries" are being submitted first and foremost for the critique but we will also recognize top entries in each category.

There will not be an overall critique book any more, so how will you receive your critique? The critique reviews will occur at the Ag Media Summit in St. Paul on Sunday July 25. (Can't be there? Don't panic.) For category 1, you will have 20 minutes with the "judge(s)" and of course be able to ask questions too. For category 2-5 you have 10 minutes for each entry.

How much does it cost? $300 for category 1 and $150 for each of your entries/portfolios in categories 2 - 5.

Do we think this will work? We hope so. In order to try something so new and different we had to dissect what we thought were the most important components of the contest. We feel that the reviews/critiques are what you are demanding. With a one-on-one discussion with the judge, we feel you will be able to get a good quality review, critique and be able to ask the judge why.

So, you can't be in St. Paul? We will make arrangements for a video taping of the critique and get this back to you.

We are still working on the fine points of this new format. We welcome your input, but go easy on us -- we're only human!
